Each year, as the holiday season approaches, I wait in anticipation of baking some of my favorite Christmas cookies with the kids. When I was little, cookie making was a pretty big deal and I have loved passing this tradition on  to my children!

I can remember how both my mom and dad and grandparents seemed to be baking cookies all throughout the season, at least there were always cookies everywhere, and never in short supply!

My very favorite Christmas Cookie, was always the Russian Tea Cakes that my Dad and I would enjoy together. Or, more like debate over who would get the last one and whose had more powdered sugar on it and how to sneak them from mom without her seeing!

More than likely, one of us would get caught and receive a healthy whack from the wooden spoon — it was worth it.

Russian Tea Cakes (some call them wedding cakes or snowballs or even, bonbons) have this amazing buttery texture to them. The powdered sugar and butter in the cookie dough melds together and when they are warm out of the oven, coated with a thick layer of melty powdered sugar, they just melt in your mouth.

When they are cooled, and coated with another layer of powdered sugar, they get a more crisp texture, still delicious but not “quite” as memorable as those burn-your-tounge ones, minutes out of the oven! My mouth is watering just thinking about them!

My Dad isn’t with us any longer, but I know that he is supervising every time I pull out the cookie sheets and start cracking open the walnuts. I make several batches throughout the season and I’d like to think he’s smiling and wishing he could sneak just one of those Russian tea Cakes for himself, maybe he does!
