Every other Monday we look forward to hearing a familiar rumble pull into the driveway around 4 o’clock. The big yellow truck with our friendly Schwan’s man! Ten minutes later we’re grinning over our usual order of Sundae Cones (#007), and the best Turkey Pot Pies (#679) I’ve ever had, when he pulls out leaving us a promise to return with more goodies in two weeks. So, last week when I was asked if I would like to review an entire meal from Schwan’s I was jumping with joy!
My family and I just sat down to a delicious dinner that got me out of the kitchen fast, and took me less than 20 minutes to prepare! We sampled the NEW Baked Ziti along with the Five Cheese Garlic French Bread, MicrosSteam Baby Broccoli Florets and Chocolate Ice Cream for dessert. This was the first time we’ve tried all of these foods from Schwan’s and I’m happy to say that they were all delicious.
The Baked Ziti was very cheesy and even though the website says that the 24oz tray serves just two, our family of four was quite satisfied with the tray being divided into quarters.
Along with the sides it was a complete and appealing meal. I chose to cook our tray of Ziti via the MicroBake method. I cooked on high in the microwave for 7 minutes, then transferred to a 375 degree oven to cook for an additional 8 minutes alongside the cheese garlic bread. We found the noodles to be tender, yet not at all mushy. The sauce was not very tomato-ey, it was cheesy without going overboard, and we thought that there was a good ratio of noodles to sauce.
I have to say that we were all completely surprised by how fresh the Baby Broccoli Florets were! They were so good that even Super G. thought they were tasty (he’s not a veggie person)! I am definitely going to be purchasing them again soon! The garlic bread was very good too, with lots of garlic flavor and plenty of cheese. The portions were quite large and next time I think I’ll cut them in half as we had a hard time finishing a whole one each. Of course, the chocolate ice cream was just perfect, it reminded me so much of summer and the ice cream stand we often go too. Just the right amount of chocolate flavor, Mmm!
Oh, and in case you were wondering, Schwan’s Baked Ziti is just one of the home-style meals inspired by Fresco By Scotto® (a popular family-run New York restaurant) that is available for home delivery. The line also has several other Italian dishes that you might enjoy.
- Baked Ziti(#762) – Ziti tossed with a 3-cheese combo of Ricotta, Parmesan and Mozzarella, smothered in flavorful rich tomato sauce.
- Penne Gratin(#478) – Penne coated in heavy cream and prosciutto (Italian-cured ham), then topped with real Parmesan cheese.

- Fusilli with Seasoned Vegetables(#431) – Corkscrew pasta tossed with a butter sauce seasoned with hints of tomato, garlic and onion. Broccoli, carrots, peas, mushrooms and butternut squash and the provided Parmesan cheese packet complete the dish.
- Eggplant & Zucchini Pie(#430) – Breaded eggplant cutlets layered with hearty zucchini slices, rich Ricotta, Mozzarella and Parmesan cheese – topped with a classic red sauce.

I’ve never ordered from Schwans before, but I know that at least someone in our neighborhood does because I’ve seen the truck going down our street before. It’d be interesting to give them a try. I’d probably start out with something similar to your giveaway meal, or perhaps some steaks (http://www.schwans.com/products/specialDetails.aspx?id=968815)… You can always tell the quality of a restaurant, food store, or whatever, by the quality of their steaks (or their fish and chips, but that’s another topic).
