Many kind souls are compelled to donate food items and monetary donations throughout the winter months to help feed the hungry — With the holiday season making us feel good will towards each other, it’s easy to remember to help out those who need it. What many of us forget is that the 50 million hungry Americans also need help during the warmer months! Unemployment is one of the biggest causes of hunger and just because winter is over, it doesn’t mean that those who are struggling have miraculously found jobs or a way to keep from being hungry!

Our country typically sees a big decline in donations during Spring. Walmart is trying to change that with the Fighting Hunger Together initiative. Along with Feeding America and four of the largest American food brands; ConAgra, General Mills, Kraft and Kellogg’s — consumers can join the fight against hunger either in-store or via Facebook.

If we all join in and work together, the Fighting Hunger Together initiative should provide 43 million meals for hungry families! Follow these simple steps to join the initiative and help your fellow Americans when you Vote to fight spring hunger with Walmart from April 9th – April 30th.

  • Choose one of the 200 communities with the highest unemployment rate, as reported by  the Department of Labor Report http://bit.ly/H1yxFKI’ll be voting for the Erie, PA Metropolitan Statistical Area since it’s the area closest to our hometown.
  • Visit the Facebook campaign DAILY to cast your vote for your chosen community between April 9th – April 30th. Make sure to share your vote to get others interested in helping out!
  • Visit your local Walmart and purchase goods from the participating brands; ConAgra, General Mills, Kraft and Kellogg’s. Purchases will allow you to donate meals to Feeding America or Action for Healthy Kids. You can check out the signage and product packaging in-store for more information on how your purchases make a difference.

We can really make a difference and help out hungry Americans! Walmart has pledged to donate a total of 2 million dollars to the top 21 communities that receive the most support, shown by your votes! The grand prize winner, and top community, will receive $1 million, while the 20 runners-up will each receive $50,000 to be used towards feeding their hungry! Winners will be announced May 1st.

What a great way to make a difference.

It’s so easy to forget that hunger is a local problem as well as a global one. I’ll be voting for Decatur, AL.
