HERSHEY’S Track & Field Games 2011

Hershey Track Field 2011 star logoExercise is something that I am usually only focused on as part of my routine. Too often I forget that my kids may not be getting all of the physical activity that they should.

With video games, television and school taking up most of their free time, it’s so important for us to try and remember to work a little bit of exercise into all of our busy lives.

HERSHEY knows how important exercise is for our children. For over 30 years they have helped more than 4 million children, in nearly 4,000 American communities, get active while learning the value of sportsmanship and have fun doing it! HERSHEY’S Track & Field games is entering it’s 34th year! Children ages 9 – 14 can compete in nationwide track and field events that include standing long jump and softball throw to a variety of running and relay race like the 50-meter dash and the 800-meter run. Entry is absolutely free, all you’ll need is a good pair of shoes!

The top 450 qualifiers will receive a four day all expense paid trip to Hershey, PA in August to have the chance to compete in the Track & Field Finals where Nine-time Olympic gold medalist Carl Lewis and Olympic decathlon legend Rafer Johnson will be the HERSHEY’s Track & Field Games 2011 ambassadors. They’ll also get to tour the world’s largest chocolate factory, HERSHEY’S Chocolate Factory, visit the Hersheypark amusement Park, and other fun attractions while they’re there! ALSO, there will be a random drawing to select two 14-year old North American Final Meet finalists (one of each gender) who will be awarded a $2,000 scholarship upon starting their freshman year of college. Wow! that’s a lot of exciting stuff going on at once!

To further encourage physical activity among kids and families, Hershey is teaming up with the Nike Reuse-A-Shoe program to collect old, worn-out athletic shoes to be recycled into Nike Grind, a material used in creating athletic and playground surfaces, as well as select Nike products. Program participants will be invited to bring used athletic shoes to state and provincial meets, which will then be recycled into Nike Grind. A HERSHEY’s Track & Field Games playground will be awarded to a participating local community as part of the program’s work with Nike’s Reuse-A-Shoe program. Since its inception in the early 1990’s, Nike’s Reuse-A-Shoe program has recycled more than 25 million pairs of athletic shoes into Nike Grind.

I learned that 4×100 Relays in the 9&10 and 11&12 age groups are held at the local, district (where applicable) and state/provincial meets only. These events do not qualify for the North American Final.
