Repel Bugs with the ThermaCELL Patio Lantern! Review

ThermaCELL logoDuring these hot and humid summer days our family spends quite a bit of time going outside in the early evening / after dark hours instead of when the sun is blazing down on us. While we enjoy the much cooler weather and peacefulness of nighttime backyard wandering we absolutely can’t stand all the annoying mosquitoes and gnats that try to make a feast of us! The ThermaCELL Patio Lantern we received to review has been coming in very handy for keeping these pests far away from us!

Dusty from sitting outside on the picnic table!

How it works (from press release)

Repel mosquitoes while adding a decorative touch to your deck with the new ThermaCELL Patio Lantern. It creates a 15 x 15 foot “Bug-Free-Zone”, allowing you to enjoy the outdoors in peace.

ThermaCELL Mosquito Repellent creates an odorless cell of protection that is up to 98% effective against mosquitoes and other biting insects. It operates on a single butane cartridge, which heats a repellent mat releasing allethrin, which is a synthetic copy of the natural repellent found in chrysanthemum flowers, covering a 225-square feet area (15ft x 15ft) for up to four hours per mat or 12 hours per refill kit.

Our View: Did you see that part where it says 98% effective? I agree with it! We’ve tried citronella candles (smelly!) and bug spray (smelly & messy) in the past with varying results that are nowhere near 98% effective. This lantern is so easy to use! There’s a little butane cartridge that just pops onto the inside of the lantern. Pt the cover back on, slide the switch to on and press start! You’re all set. If you want to be able to use the light in the lantern you will need to put 4 AA batteries into the base.

ThermaCELL patio lantern review

I love that the ThermaCELL patio lantern is so easy to take with us! We grabbed it on Fourth of July night when we went out the door and off to the beach to watch the fireworks. While we were there we used the sturdy handle to hang it from a driftwood log…  perfect! Then we used the lantern (on high) to find or way in pitch dark to the bathrooms in the parking lot… very cool! The Insect repellent mats worked great because no one in our little party was bitten or bugged by anything! This while were standing in the water watching the display! We live in a wooded/brushy area that has a large pond out back so definitely have a ton of mosquitoes! This lantern still works great in our backyard, we may get one or two bites but are not attacked by swarms of bugs that chase us inside! Makes me very happy! We’ll be using it again next week when my daughter has a friend over to camp out in her tent! Perfect for them to use for both light and so I don’t have to slather them with any bug spray (:

I need to get one of these. I got so bitten up on the 4th that now I'm afraid to go outside after like 7pm.

That sounds fabulous. I would definitely – well, more likely – sit on my deck if I had one of those. Two to be safe. :-) Cool.
