Exergen Temporal Scanner Thermometer Review

Exergen LogoA sick child (or mommy) is one of the worst things I can think of dealing with. Truly a nightmare. I’m one of those moms that keeps her child home at the first sign of sickness, which is usually you guessed it – a fever. We have used several methods over the years for temperature taking and none of them have left me wholly satisfied, I never quite trust the readings. I was recently introduced to a newer option that I’m very optimistic about – the Exergen TemporalScanner Thermometer by Exergen Corporation. I know it’s a mouthful but I promise it’s so much easier to use than it is to say!

What is It! (from the site)

The Exergen TemporalScanner is the world’s first infrared thermometer designed to measure the body temperature by taking a reading from the temporal artery. Patented technology employs an infrared sensor that accurately registers body temperature to within +0.2 degrees Fahrenheit – a much more accurate means of taking temperature than any other way including oral, rectal, auxillary (under arm) and tympanic (ear). It is also the least invasive method. TemporalScanner has been proven more accurate than ear thermometers by a Harvard Medical School study.

– The only thermometer made in the United States.
– Contains no mercury.
– Needs no additional purchases such as probe covers.

My View!
When we first opened the thermometer and tried taking our temps we got readings all over the place, I sat down and read through the simple instructions and realized that we needed to let the scanner acclimate to our home’s temperature for accurate readings. I tried it again later in the day with much better results but I still was getting wide ranging temps, so I looked up a few things online and tried them out.

Here are some tips that I found helpful!

  • Take off the protective plastic cover! It cannot scan through it.
  • Be sure there is no hair over the forehead and that you don’t take the temp where the side of your head was resting on a pillow or something.
  • When used in different areas of the home with different temps let it acclimate for 20 minutes before using.
  • Wait 30 seconds between readings for best accuracy.
  • Make sure the head of the thermometer is flush against the forehead, about midway between hairline and brow, press the button then quickly but firmly sweep it across the forehead and down slightly toward the ear while holding the button. Listen for the beeping. Let go of the button just before lifting it from the forehead. This takes some practice but gets easier with use.
  • If you’re sweaty you should press and hold the scan button and  gently press the probe just behind the earlobe, release button and check reading.

Sound like a lot? It really isn’t. Once you try it a few times you’ll be more confident. I can’t tell you how much I love that it only takes 2-3 seconds to take the kid’s temps! In the past we’ve used digital oral thermometers, the kids hate them because they take SO long (in their minds), they’re even worse when you have a stuffy nose, can’t breathe and have to hold your mouth closed for the entire time! Last month we bought one of the ear thermometers because sickness has been running rampant in our home. It’s very frustrating for us, our daughter has a problem with ear wax build up and I think it skews the reading, they are always off by 2 or more degrees with the the ear one. I  also don’t like trying to wake the kids at 2am to get a temp when they’re sick, with this this forehead thermometer all I need is a quick sweep to check! Love that! I do agree with other reviewers that it would be nice to have a back light for easier nighttime reading.

In the end I would recommend the Exergen Thermometer, when used properly it has given us accurate and consistent readings.

With two toddler boys this product would sure come in handy! I can never get them to sit still while I hold the regular thermometer under their tongue or arm pit. :) We visited the Exergen.com website and are now following your blog! So glad to have found you! <3

I would love to have this product for a lot of reasons. #1 It looks really easy to use (thank Goodness!). #2 I love that it's non-invasive. My daughter is only 1 and she already runs away when she sees the ear thermometer we use now coming her way. This would certainly take the drama out of taking her temperature. It also sounds like it would be more accurate than an ear thermometer.
