If you are looking for a new family-friendly movie, you may want to check out “A Monster In Paris.” After very good reviews in France, Shout Factory has just released the movie in America, on 3D, Blu-Ray, DVD & Digital Media, April 16th. We recently received a copy for review and this charming film was a surprising hit with our family.
It’s 1910 Paris and the Seine is flooded and two unlikely heroes are about to have an adventure that will change their lives! Movie projectionist, Emile, and his eccentric friend, Raoul, “accidentally” have a mishap while delivering one of Raoul’s orders to a vacationing scientist’s lab. When a few drops here and there go wrong, they inadvertently create a “Monster” the likes of which you have never seen before!
When the media and Commissioner Maynott blow the monster sightings out of proportion without hard evidence (as they are likely to do), the Monster finds itself scared and alone. Beautiful cabaret singer Lucille, played by French actress and singer, Vanessa Paradis, befriends the creature, whom she names Franc, when she realizes he means no harm and has a beautiful singing voice along with extraordinary musical talent.
Together with Emile, Raoul, an adorable monkey and even Maud (Emile’s dream girl), Lucille helps to stop Commissioner Maynott’s mad scheme to kill Franc and promote himself as a hero of Paris, all the while showing that he is in fact the only monster to be found in this film.
All in all, I thought this movie had a great flow. The first few minutes started off a bit slow and my daughter and I looked at each other wondering if we would enjoy the movie at all. But things quickly picked and you cannot help but love the muted colors of the era, low-key atmosphere and distinct personalities of the characters. The city of Paris is depicted so beautifully and the soundtrack is amazing and I can only imagine that, could I understand it, the whole movie would be simply awesome in its native French version.
A Monster in Paris is available at Walmart, Target and on Amazon.com.
When you do sit down to watch with your family, be sure to watch through the credits as there are several fun scenes to finish off the movie. We truly enjoyed this enchanting tale and will be watching it again many times over!

SYNOPSIS
A wacky inventor, his camera-crazy best friend and a madcap monkey make a massive mistake when let loose in a mad scientist’s laboratory. With lotions and potions spilling everywhere, the troublesome trio accidentally creates Franc, the product of a reaction between a common flea and one of the scientist’s mystery concoctions. What they fail to realize, however, is that this ‘monster’ is actually a soft-centered soul with an astounding talent for music.
With the help of an enchanting nightclub singer Lucille, Franc becomes the talk of the town, just as stories of Paris’s newest monster attract the attention of the egotistical police commissioner, hell bent on securing a big prize to help his battle to become mayor. The unwitting scientists and the singer must team up to protect Franc, a monster with more than a musical career to protect!
