Go Purple to Support Domestic Violence Awareness #HopeLine #Giveaway

go-purple-to-support-domestic-violence-awareness-monthOctober is Domestic Violence Awareness Month — a subject that I can relate to on a personal level.

In fact, odds are you are close to someone who has experienced or is now experiencing domestic violence in their own home.  Domestic violence isn’t choosy– Men, Women and Children are all victims and the numbers are astounding.  One in four women experience domestic violence in their lifetime.  More than three million children are witnesses each year and more than three million physical assaults are on men in the United States.

Domestic Violence happens near you.

I grew up in a home that put on a great face to the outside world.  A home where verbal abuse was the norm and having all of your possessions thrown away or burned in the garbage on a whim was something that happened regularly.  Where screaming and fighting and belittling became the white noise.  And, while there were no physical scars left behind, I still struggle with the self-worth and anxiety issues that those years left behind.  It isn’t easy to speak of, as my Dad and I eventually grew to have a wonderful and loving relationship in later years and before his death, but my young childhood is a roller coaster of great memories and hurtful moments I’ve buried deep.  My mom and I were fortunate enough to be put in touch with a women’s shelter where we lived during my parent’s divorce.   I can only hope that all women brave enough to take control of their own lives are able to find a safe haven like we did.  A place to begin the healing and to pick up the pieces.

HopeLine from Verizon

This is a sponsored conversation written by me on behalf of SheSpeaks/HopeLine from Verizon, all thoughts and opinions are genuine and 100% my own.

As purple is the color of domestic violence awareness, HopeLine® from Verizon encourages you to support victims and survivors of domestic violence by going purple this month.

What is HopeLine?

Verizon has a longstanding commitment to domestic violence awareness and prevention, which has been a philanthropic focus since 2001 through the HopeLine program.

Domestic violence is a national problem that impacts our communities, neighbors, coworkers, friends and family members. Verizon’s HopeLine program provides financial support to non-profit organizations that are committed to connecting survivors and victims to vital resources.  HopeLine also collects used wireless phones, chargers and accessories and through the program, Verizon has donated millions of dollars, thousands of phones and many resources to domestic violence awareness and prevention organizations.  HopeLine phones are a vital resource that help to keep the lines of private communication open between survivors and family, friends and employers.  For more information, read about Verizon’s HopeLine program.

How can you help support Domestic Violence Awareness?

Your support is a positive step in taking action against domestic violence.  Shout your support out loud to victims and survivors of domestic violence by going purple, the color of Domestic Violence Awareness. Just visit any nearby Verizon store or go online to purchase exclusive purple accessories, like a LG Tone Pro™ Wireless Stereo Headset, or a purple phone or tablet case, and HopeLine® from Verizon will donate $1, up to $100,000, to the National Domestic Violence Hotline!

Verizon HopeLine program - exclusive purple accessories to support Domestic Violence Awareness Month

You can also take action against domestic violence by helping HopeLine reach its goal of 1 million phone donations by the end of 2015.  Simply drop off your wireless phones, chargers and accessories, from any carrier, at a Verizon store and help support victims and survivors of domestic violence.

Thanks to supporters like you, HopeLine has collected more than 11.4 million phones and donated more than 190,000 phones to date.  The US Department of Justice reports that more than 20,000 phone calls are placed to domestic violence hotlines nationwide, on a typical day.  let’s work together with Verizon’s HopeLine program to make these statistics atypical.  Domestic Violence isn’t going to go away without our help.
