Silent Signs You’re Too Stressed Out

friday-yet

Stress and women kind of go hand in hand – especially if you’re a mom. You’re inundated with so many different responsibilities that quite frankly, you can forget to breathe. While you love the job of being a mother, wife, and career woman, when you’re going non-stop at some point the stress can get the best of you. Because stress is often referenced as the “silent killer,” it’s best to stay on top of things by paying attention to the signs and taking care of yourself.

Never Self-Medicate

Women are often thought to have “super powers” that give them the ability to take on the weight of the world. Because we don’t want to disappoint those we care for and support, we often mask our feelings and press through. The only problem with that is it is common for us to self-medicate with alcohol. A glass of wine here and there to “ease the stress” can quickly turn into a full-blown addiction that requires treatment. If it has reached that point, you should find a women’s recovery center to help you kick the habit.

Sometimes it can be difficult to tell when your stress levels are too high. It doesn’t always manifest in ways that are easy to point out. Below are a few silent stress indicators that you shouldn’t ignore:

Bad Menstrual Cramps

You may have thought that your menstrual cramps were normal, but if they’re extremely painful, it could be the result of stress. Stress causes the hormones to become unbalanced therefore creating an unpleasant environment during your time of the month.

Bad Tooth Ache

Has your mouth been hurting a lot lately? Did you know that a hurting jaw or mouth ache out of nowhere could be the result of grinding your teeth? Teeth grinding is often heightened by stress which can greatly impact your oral health.

Strange Dreams

Dreams can be very revealing to your emotional well-being. When you’re stressed you tend to have unpleasant dreams throughout the night. You also don’t get good rest because you’re constantly waking up from the strange dreams.

Acne

If you’re breaking out a lot more than normal, chances are you’re stressed out. Stress increases inflammation which can lead to breakouts like adult acne.

Sweet Tooth

If you’ve been dealing with a sweet tooth lately, you could be really stressed out. Research has shown that when people are stressed out they tend to crave more sweets.

Common Signs of Stress

There are more common signs of stress that should also not be overlooked. If you’ve experienced these symptoms along with the ones listed above, you need to find a way to relieve your stress quickly. Some common signs include:

  • Headaches
  • Muscle pain
  • Fatigue or insomnia
  • Decreased sex drive
  • Lack of focus
  • Inability to eat

Getting Help

Stress is one of those things you can’t avoid, but if you find that you’re stressed out more often than not, you want to get help while you can. Too much stress or stress that is unresolved can lead to serious health issues, including death. There are plenty of ways to minimize the stress in your life, including things like pampering yourself with a massage. However, if you’re at the point where you’re self-medicating or simply not feeling yourself, it is best to get help from a therapist or recovery center.

So moms, even though stress is one of those unavoidable parts of the job, if you notice that it’s getting out of hand, it’s important to do something about it. Take a trip, ask for help from family, or even treat yourself to a massage, but whatever you do, don’t chalk it up as normal. If you’ve noticed any of the above signs of stress (common or silent) act fast to avoid adverse consequences. You’re too important to your family to allow your health to fall by the wayside.

I get a headache if I get stressed out. I’ve been teaching a grade that is awesome but the kids are behaviorally challenged (alternative school) and I’ve been living on aspirin. ;)

This is definitely true!! I really feel stressed out a lot, but I know it’s a result of my anxiety, etc. Great post.
