Support Hunger Action Month with Walmart & Fight Hunger!

This is a Sponsored post written by me on behalf of Walmart for SocialSpark. All opinions are 100% mine.

Hunger. Do we truly know what that word feels like? I don’t mean that slight rumbly feeling you get in your belly telling you it’s time for lunch, I mean true painful, gnawing hunger. Fortunately, our family has never had to experience a desperate need for groceries. Sure, we have had our hard times when eggs, potoatoes and that cheap mac and cheese seemed like a meal fit for a king, but true hunger? — No, we are the lucky ones.

According to the USDA, one out of every six Americans will know true hunger this year. That’s 50 million people who will be struggling and worrying about where their next meal will come from. They could be your neighbor, your friend, your parents. Walmart is working alongside suppliers, associates and customers to donate up to 53 million meals to Feeding America and give $2.5 million for hunger relief this year. In September and October, as part of Hunger Action Month, we can all help Walmart fulfill their hunger relief promise to end hunger in America.

By Fighting Hunger Together, we all can make a difference in the lives of our fellow Americans. A difference in the lives of families just like ours; children and elders and struggling moms and dads.

Thorough October 12, when we purchase select products from General Mills, Kellogs, Unilever, Kraft Foods and ConAgra Foods at Walmart stores, and follow the package instructions, we can participate in the “Give Meals” promotion either online or via a phone app. Look for the “Fighting Hunger Together” signs to get started. Or, you can visit the Fighting Hunger Together section of Walmart’s website to learn more about how you can turn 1 product into 7 meals for needy families. All of the participating food suppliers have made a signifigant contribution to help fight hunger in America. Kraft Foods alone has provided over 46 million meals to families through the Feeding America program.

Fighting Hunger Together starts in the community. Our communities are often times the only resource for hungry families. I am not ashamed to share how thankful we have been in the past to receive a box of food from food pantry, or a free lunch for our children. These are all community-driven programs that many food-insecure families rely on and we can help them thrive. For a chance to help your community, join the Walmart’s Golden Spark promotion.

When you nominate a community, you are entering for the chance to win one of 40 “Golden Sparks” awarded by Walmart. Each of the 40 winners will receive $50,000 in funding to present to a local nonprofit so that they can expand or create a backpack program in their community. Enter once a day through October 12th!

What is a backpack program?
A backpack program is designed to meet the needs of hungry children by providing them with nutritious, easy to prepare foods to take home during the weekends or holiday vacation when other resources they rely on are not available such as free or reduced lunch or breakfast.

Get involved today by nominating a community in the Golden Spark promotion and look for the Fighting Hunger Together signs at your local Walmart. We can all make a true difference in our communities! Perhaps you were once the recipient of a helping hand in lean times, or maybe you have already offered your help to the needy? I would love to hear how hunger in America impacts you and your family, let me know in the comments!

There should be nobody starving it breaks my heart. I’m glad companies are stepping forward and there are simple ways for us to help

I agree with Nichol. It so sad that there are many people starving within this country. I donate and do a lot of community service and you have no idea how many people are living well below the poverty level even in the most affluent places.
