Each night before we go to bed, I walk around the house and carefully check each window and door to be sure they are secure and locked. I want to ensure the safety of my family. While it is easy to remember to do this check each night, I, like so many others often forget about another very important way to keep ourselves and our families safe.

Identity Theft. In today’s world of virtual and electronic everything, it is vital to take a proactive stance when thinking about your personal identity safety and security. Last year, my husband was the victim of having his debit card information stolen by a “skimming” device. We are still not sure who did this or where it happened at, our small fair was suspect but nothing was ever proven. For several months following our identity theft crisis, many many others in our small town had the same thing happen to them. We were fortunate in that our bank was really on top of things and filed fraud complaint for my husband. He did indeed manage to get all of his money back through the complaint process but it was a very scary time knowing someone out there had his information!

Nowadays, we carry our ATM and credit cards around in RFID blocking sleeves but we are always on the alert for warning signs of scams, fraud or skimming. Identity theft can happen when a thief gets ahold of your social security number, ATM and PIN numbers or even your name and address. So, we are especially protective of our online security, both online and off. Perhaps if we would have had a Identity Theft protection plan, such as LifeLock, we would have been alerted sooner. You can check out LifeLock on Facebook to get an idea of what they may be able to do for you.

LifeLock Individual Plans are comprised of several levels of service that will proactively monitor your personal information 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. They provide peace of mind and depending upon your plan, LifeLock will alert you to any changes to your information or attempts to alter public records, and addresses. They will also alert you to any attempts a thief may make to apply for credit cards, payday loans or new checking and savings accounts in your name.

Another way that thieves can gain access to your information and steal your identity, is by hacking your online passwords. How hack friendly is your password? These scary password hack statistics may make you reconsider your password safety!

Do you know how fast a professional hacker can breach your password security?

  • If you have 6 characters in your password with no symbols. it only takes a professional .000224 seconds to hack it.
  • If you have 10 characters with one symbol in your password, it takes up to 20 days for a professional to break in.

Are you still confident that thieves will not be able to crack your passwords? Or, have you already had to deal with a case of Identity theft? I would love to hear your comments about how you think LifeLock could help protect your identity!

It’s so hard to make a good password sometimes. But I’ve never used one of the more common ones thankfully. :)

Lifelock is without a doubt the best credit monitoring & id theft protection network out there. It’s a bit more expensive than some of the others like TrustedID, Identity Guard and Privacy Guard, but their plans are comprehensive. They just added a new feature called Lifelock Junior which allows you to add your children to the plan to ensure their identities aren’t stolen and used to open lines of credit without anyone knowing about it for years.
