Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax DVD/Blu-ray Combo Pack Movie Review

Dr. Seuss' The Lorax movie 2012Dr. Seuss has been a part of our lives since, well, forever! When my son was a baby, I collected as many Seuss books as I could find. His two favorites were Are you My Mother? and The Lorax. When I found The Lorax TV special on DVD in the 90’s, when he was still just a little guy, we must have watched that half hour special 4 times a day for a year. I knew every line by heart and so did he. Fast forward to this year — at seventeen years old, my son was still excited to watch one of his favorite book characters come to the big screen in the 2012 release of Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax movie.

We received an advanced copy of Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax movie to review this past week. We’ve already watched it twice and I’m sure many more family movie nights will include this wonderful version of Dr. Seuss’  book come to life. In case you have never read the book {have you been living under a rock??}, here is a quick synopis:

The imaginative world of Dr. Seuss comes to life like never before in this visually spectacular adventure from the creators of Despicable Me! Twelve-year-old Ted will do anything to find a real live Truffula Tree in order to impress the girl of his dreams. As he embarks on his journey, Ted discovers the incredible story of the Lorax, a grumpy but charming creature who speaks for the trees. Featuring the voice talents of Danny DeVito, Ed Helms, Zac Efron, Taylor Swift, Rob Riggle, Jenny Slate, and Betty White, Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax is filled with hilarious fun for everyone!

From the moment we popped in the DVD, to the end of the film, we were captivated. The music score was beautiful and went so well with the story, we especially loved “Let It Grow”. The characters were fun and had great personalities — except for Mr. O’Hare who was appropriately despicable and easy to dislike. We laughed, a lot! I love it when a movie, animated or not, makes you FEEL something and Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax certainly does that.

My son and I both agreed that we really enjoyed that the The Lorax movie was more than just a rehash of the book. We liked that we now have a back story to “Why” Ted was out there searching for answers from The Once-ler — even if it did have to do with impressing a girl.

thumbs up movie reviewWhile we enjoyed the new pieces to the story, we were also very glad that the basic theme was the same. I have to say that using Danny DeVito’s voice talents for The Lorax himself was perfect! I liked that The Lorax had a great sense of humour and a bit of a sneaky side with his antics. Betty White as Granny was a treat, she is such a funny lady! And my daughter was excited about Taylor Swift as Audrey. The Truffula trees looked just as I would imagine them to be and I have always always loved Dr. Seuss’ humming fish, they are so very cute!

I also appreciated all of the extra features on the Combo Pack. The three mini movies exclusive to the Combo Pack were really cute and I always enjoy watching the commentary about how the movies come to life. There were even a few segments on how to draw The Lorax, how to draw a Bar-ba-loot and how to draw a humming fish! I’m not sure if this is in every Combo Pack, but I also received a $1.00 off a GE energy-efficient light bulb coupon in the DVD case! All-in-all, I personally feel that The Lorax movie sends out a great message that is important for everyone to remember. I think it is a film that will appeal to young and old without being boring to the adults.

Sadly, I never heard of The Lorax until the movie came out. And I read lots of Dr. Seuss as a kid, go figure. Nice review. Sounds like a treat for the whole family.

We loved this as well! I loved the book growing up so it was a treat watching the film with the kiddos. I also loved Let it Grow, fun!

I’ve actually been counting down for this to come out – we saw it in the theaters in 3D and I loved it, so did my children. It has such a good message, too – that’s the eco-mom in me speaking, of course. I’ll be looking for the blu-ray combo pack when we go shopping for it :) (we always love the extras)

We LOVED The Lorax! We will definitely be buying it!

I need to watch this movie. It sounds and looks awesome. The Despicable Me mini-movies were just too cute for words so I’m dying to see what they came up with for The Lorax.

Great review! I love how there is this deeper story to The Lorax and it gets all eco/enviro which is my thing. ;)

I still haven’t seen the movie but I grew up with the book next to my bed. I’ve always liked Dr. Seuss and this is one of my favs.

I must have been living under a rock, I’ve never read this book. Though I have read many Dr. Seuss books and like the movies.

I can’t believe I haven’t read or watched this one yet! My kids are really looking forward to watching it, though.

I just saw this in Walmart and debating on whether or not to buy it, I wonder if the girls will like it.

I love watching movies but I don’t have enough money to bring the whole family, so I have been waiting for the Lorax to come out on DVD for months! I finally got it in the mail with my Blockbuster at Home subscription and it was well worth the wait. Your review hit the nail on the head. The environmental message that this movie sends is wonderful for the kids, and the animation was the best I have seen since Despicable Me. One of my colleagues at Dish said that she forgot she was watching a cartoon at times. If you have lived under a rock your whole life and haven’t seen this movie don’t do the same to your kids. This movie is great for everyone, especially the “young-ins.”
