2012 Advance Auto Parts Monster Jam at Lake Erie Speedway

Last Saturday I convinced the family to go to the Advanced Auto Parts Monster Jam at the Lake Erie Speedway. We’ve attended a few races at this Erie, PA racetrack in the past and enjoy the track atmosphere so I thought it would be a fun night out for all of us!

Six trucks were featured at this event — USHRA Monster Trucks Grave Digger®, Monster Mutt℠, Advance Auto Parts Grinder℠, Wolverine, Higher Education, and Incinerator!

My daughter loved Monster Mutt and thought it was pretty funny the way his ears and tail flapped while he was doing stunts. I remember how much I always wanted to be able to go to a Monster Truck event when I was a kid, I was a bit of a tomboy and I used to love the Grave Digger!

It was pretty cool to see the Grave Digger 30th Anniversary Monster Truck at the Erie event.

I thought my favorite of the night was going to be the Higher Education Monster Truck. There is something pretty cool about watching a giant jacked up bus do wheelies over a row of crushed cars!

There is something even cooler about watching that bus grab some air while jumping a van.

We watched the trucks battle it out in the Chicago loop course. Two trucks competed against each other around the track, driving over the crush car stacks and making quick turns. I loved it when they had it timed right to make jumps at the same time!

One of the best parts of the show was when each truck had 60 seconds for the Freestyle round. There were jumps over the van, wheelies, donuts, power wheelies and more. This part of the show had some great action and had fans cheering along!

The sun was starting to set over the parking lot behind the packed stands, as the trucks geared up for the Donut competition.

I loved those Donuts! Loud, rumbling, smoking hot! We thought the Wolverine was amazing and driver Alex Blackwell had the fans on their feet clapping and cheering as he almost took the win with 24 revolutions!

Wow! Wolverine was our favorite Monster Truck! I think Wolverine got the most air on the jumps and had some great wheelies! All in all, our family had a wonderful time out at the track. While I was disappointed that there were no dirt mounds for jumping like I thought there would be, I think it was still a good show.

My tween even had a good time and I was lucky enough to run into a blogging friend, yay!

One word of caution if you ever visit Lake Erie Speedway, bring cash. There was no ATM available and the only place that would accept a debit card was the food stand in the building. We weren’t able to purchase any souvenirs or Monster Jam t-shirts because they only accepted cash at the stands outside! I really couldn’t believe that such a large establishment didn’t have an ATM available for its patrons!

    That looks like fun!

Our son tried to go to a Monster Jam show a couple of years ago, but I think he was too young still. It was way too loud for him. It’s too bad because it looks like tons of fun. We’ll have to try again soon.

It was a fun show. I too was disappointed about the track not having more obstacles but Gavyn loved it. And I’m still giddy I got to meet you!

I’ve always wondered what the appeal was of big cars crushing little ones. I guess you have to see it in real life to really feel the excitement. I do have to say that ‘school bus’ is pretty cool though!
