May marks the countdown to planting season for us Mid-Atlantic gardeners. Our last frost usually falls somewhere between Memorial Day weekend and the second week of June. I’m not letting the warmer than average tempetures fool me into planting too early as I know Mother Nature can keep a few tricks up her sleeve! I have started a few plants indoors and of course I have my house plants to tide me over until I can get out into the dirt.

As we have the past several years, we are trying to keep our gardens as natural and chemical free as possible.  Last year we created our raised beds and filled them with aged horse manure, organic soil and vermiculite to promote good drainage. Our beds did very well but one thing I forgot about was fertilizer! This year I’ll be trying a new-to-me organic plant food from Whitney Farms.

I recently repotted a neglected sickly spider plant into a larger pot. It was starting to get root bound and yellow so I knew that I needed to rescue it quickly if I wanted it to survive. I also removed all of the babies it had running and repotted them as well. Since my poor spider plant wasn’t in the best shape, I was happy to have a bag of the new Whitney Farms® organic All Purpose Plant Food to test. So far my spider plant is doing great and has already started to perk up and regain its green color!

I haven’t used a dry plant food in several years, I was really pleased with how easy the Whitney farms plant food is to apply! There is no measuring and mixing with water, I just sprinkled it over the soil and was done! I cannot wait to use the organic Tomato & Vegetable food in our raised beds this year! I think it’s really going to make a huge difference in the yield and health of our vegetable plants! I’m also going to be giving all of the plants in my perennial gardens a good dose of the all purpose food this coming weekend when I get out there to clean them up.

A few other things I love about the Whitney Farms® Plant Food and Tomato and Vegetable food are that it:

  • is ideal for a wide variety of different plants
  • feeds with protein based nitrogen, not manure
  • is small easy to store resealable bag
  • has low to no dust when using and applyingr
  • has no odor that I can detect
  • very easy to use

Knowing that my homegrown food isn’t covered in a barage of chemicals feels great! If you would like to try out the Whitney Farms organic plant food, you can go here to print a $3.00 off coupon that is good towards the purchase of plant foods and soils! Happy Gardening!

Fascinating! I am good at growing plants, even though I don’t use fertilizer. I am always into organic, especially in vegetables. But would definitely give this a try
