Blind Pig & The Acorn Guest Post by Tipper Pressley

Hello. My name is Tipper Pressley. I write at the Blind Pig & The Acorn a website, I own, dedicated to preserving and celebrating Appalachian heritage and culture.

As long as I can remember I have craved a connection with my heritage and the creativity that abounds in it. My hope is that through the Blind Pig & The Acorn I can begin to understand how the love for the past can be woven into a hope for the future as well as an appreciation for the present. I truly believe it’s important for each generation to learn the ways of old as a direct map to our future.

Features of site include:

  • Mountain Folk- profiles of people who show an inclination to old time ways. Whether someone is detailing how to can green beans, plant corn, quilt, or simply telling about their life, there is a wealth of information to be gathered from the people of the Appalachian Mountains.
  • Pickin’ & Grinnin’ In The Kitchen- Just saying the word “Appalachia” brings to mind music. I grew up in a musical family and was blessed to hear traditional music on a daily basis. Live music is featured as well as through a music player on the site.
  • Appalachian Folklore
  • Gardening tips and techniques
  • Preserving and canning
  • Cooking old time foods
  • Grannyisms- Precious, funny, or inspiring memories of one’s grandmother. Growing up I called one grandmother Granny and the other Mamaw. There are many things about them I wish I had paid better attention too-so many things I wish I could ask them now. I collect Grannyisms from people all over the world, seems I’m not alone in my wishing.
  • Spread the Love- A monthly giveaway. To be entered in the monthly giveaway leave a comment on one of my posts or on the Grannyism page. If you have a site-your link will also be added to my round up of commenters for the month.

March will make two years since I first started the Blind Pig. During that time I’ve met wonderful folks from all parts of the world. While some have a general interest in Appalachia-many have a direct connection through their lives, parents, or their grandparents. I’ve also been delighted to learn I’m not alone in my endeavor to preserve and celebrate the unique culture and heritage of Appalachia.
I hope you’ll take the time to visit me at the Blind Pig & The Acorn.

First of all, congratulations for almost reaching two years! Only a couple of months until the second anniversary :)
What I loved most with the features is Grannyisms. I wish I had more time to spend with my grandma too. Reading about other people's stories is really nice and makes one feel that she is not alone!
