On the Subject of Retirement – Guest Post by Bob Curtis

On the Subject of Retirement
By Robert Curtis

I have been with the Utah Transit Authority as a bus operator now for over three decades. How the time has flown! I have seen many come and many go over the years. But I have just begun to notice, in recent months, how many are retiring that I have come to know so well.

With the subject of “retirement” on my mind, lately, I have discovered the following:

Retirement is a time for an accounting of the years you have shared up to this point in your life. They are meant to be recalled with fondness and joy… for they were traded in good faith in their passing.

Choose to remember the good. Choose to remember the kindnesses. Remember the difference you have made in other people’s lives by the “little things” you have done along the way. Be comforted on knowing it was good.

Choose to remember experiences of growth and learning, for you have exchanged these years of your life for the memories that you have made. Cherish them fondly as the gift for your offering.

Now, step forward into a whole new world of opportunity… for when a door from the past closes upon us, a new door to our future opens.

But remember… the future is what we make of it.
Keep smiling. Be happy!
