Daughter’s Fever

I cannot sleep, not yet. My daughter is sick and I hate sleeping while she is ill.

Earlier this hot evening I made her comfy on the big couch,
gathered her water bottle to hug or rest a flushed cheek on,
a washcloth for her brow, freshened with cool water every half hour or so,
a tall glass of water with a hot pink straw,
her red flashlight,
2 pillows,
a crisp cool sheet.. for underneath,
and the light throw from the back of the couch.

Now the waiting.

I watered the garden by myself at 8 p.m.,
tomatoes, beans, peppers, peas,
a potato plant is just popping through the straw!
checked on and petted the chicks in the yard pen,
covered them and tucked them in for the night,
gathered a few stray eggs from the coop,
Took a moment and enjoyed the quiet coolness of day’s end,

No, I will not sleep just yet. I will stay up awhile and wait.
Wait for my beautiful girl to feel cooler,
while she sleeps stretched on the long couch,
and I sleep with feet hanging off of the short loveseat.

Hope your sweetie feels better soon. I have very fond memories of my mom taking care of me when I was ill. She would always gather my favorite things around me too.

One other thing I really enjoyed was that she read to me, even when I was an older girl. One time in high school I got very sick with Mono and missed a ton of school. On the days I felt like a bowl of jelly, mom would read to me, a chapter here, a chapter there and it was like warm healing liquid to my soul.
